Walpole Bay tidal pool

Safer sea swimming

English Heritage says that England only has 13 tidal pools and that the one at Walpole Bay in Cliftonville is a particularly impressive specimen. Designed in 1937, it’s now Grade-II listed thanks to its size (a whopping four acres) and because building work had to be carried out night and day due to the tides. It’s three sides of a rectangle, which means you can saunter in from the beach or skirt the periphery of the pool and jump in at the deep end.
